Notes on this watch
Built for legibility in any conditions, the Rolex Explorer is an Oystersteel sport watch with a black dial, characteristic 3, 6 and 9 Arabic numerals and a smooth bezel.
The genuine watch
The genuine Explorer uses an Oystersteel Oyster case with a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal and 100 metres of water resistance. The black dial carries 3, 6 and 9 numerals with a Chromalight display, emitting a long-lasting blue glow, as do the hour markers and hands. The smooth bezel in Oystersteel is an established feature of the Explorer line.
Factory notes
The r/RepTime Who Makes the Best guide (May 2026) covers two Explorer references. For the 39 mm 214270 with a 3132 clone movement, VSF is best (Super Rep). For the 40 mm 224270 with a 3230 clone movement, VSF is best and earns the top NWBIG mark. Ask us which factory version is available before you pay.
Check on your watch
- The dial is black with luminescent 3, 6 and 9 Arabic numerals.
- The remaining hours have rectangular luminous baton markers.
- The Mercedes-style hands carry luminescent fill.
- The bezel is smooth and polished with no markings.
